Telangana’s approved MBBS intake has reached 10,500 seats across 66 medical colleges for 2026–27, according to the National Medical Commission’s latest seat-matrix notice, published on September 22. The number is real. The ownership of the achievement is where the political theatre begins.
Union minister G. Kishan Reddy has attributed the addition of 1,060 seats to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, according to a report quoting his claim. The NMC documents, however, record approved annual intake — not which party created every seat, funded every college or produced every doctor. The regulator’s rules cover the establishment of institutions and increases in MBBS intake; they do not turn every approval into a ministerial trophy.
The reported 66 colleges include 36 government and 30 private institutions. Telangana’s state government has documented its role in establishing government medical colleges, while private institutions account for much of the reported expansion. The exact college-wise trail behind the 1,060-seat increase, and any Union funding attached to it, is not established in the material reviewed.
The seat matrix says 10,500. It does not say “made by Modi”. The BJP supplied that caption itself.
