Revanth Reddy says Telangana will press to cut the minimum age to stand for Assembly and Lok Sabha from 25 to 21. The law today says 25; changing it needs Parliament.
A proposed Telangana Assembly resolution would urge Parliament to change the minimum contesting age from 25 to 21.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has again argued that the minimum age to contest Assembly elections should be reduced from 25 to 21, and said a resolution would be moved in the state Assembly to urge the change. The Chief Minister has previously framed it as a parity question: if a 21‑year‑old can be an IAS officer, Mayor or Zilla Parishad Chairperson, why not an MLA or MP?
The current legal position is 25 for Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, and 30 for Rajya Sabha and State Legislative Councils, according to the Election Commission of India. Any reduction would require changes to constitutional provisions and election law by Parliament; a state resolution would be political advocacy, not itself a legal change.
Reddy made similar statements in August and October 2025, with the Telangana government’s portal recording that a resolution “will be introduced in the state assembly.” A reported plan for a special session and forwarding the resolution to the Centre has been mentioned in coverage; the state has not published a summons, schedule or draft text on the public record yet.
