BJP’s ‘lakhs of crores’ math class

Telangana BJP plans Sep 5–6 protests alleging a “lakhs of crores” 22-A land scam. The Congress government admits clerical errors and promises fixes; an actual scam figure remains a BJP slogan, not a record.

A Telangana government office desk holds land records, correction files and a calculator beneath a blackboard reading “LAKHS OF CRORES?”. An oversized protest speech balloon towers over the small evidence file, while a distant crowd gathers near trees outside.

The government has acknowledged errors in prohibited-properties data and promised corrections; the alleged figure remains unverified.

The Telangana BJP will stage protests at Indira Park on September 5 and 6, accusing the Congress government of a Section 22-A land “scam worth lakhs of crores” and demanding a white paper. That line came from BJP Legislature Party leader Alleti Maheshwar Reddy, who also threatened to “storm the Assembly” if the government doesn’t act. A threat is not an audit.

Here is the record, minus the megaphone. The state has acknowledged mistakes in the prohibited-properties data, apologised for the inconvenience, and set up a committee to correct wrongly tagged private parcels. The Chief Minister has said title-holders need not worry and that survey numbers will be split so the government-acquired bit stops swallowing the whole plot. That is a fix to an administrative mess — not proof of “lakhs of crores”.

BRS had already asked for a judicial probe and a white paper last week — before the BJP discovered Indira Park — which is the grown-up way to settle facts. If the BJP has evidence of a scam on the scale it chants, it can bring it to that probe. If not, bring water for the slogan march.

Meanwhile, the Congress government in Telangana is on the hook to finish the clean-up it promised; the BJP’s arithmetic can wait for a calculator.
