Black T-shirts, five cases, one nervous government
BRS protests were reported at multiple Telangana locations after legislators were stopped at the Assembly gate. The Congress government supplied the confrontation; the party’s week-long campaign supplied the calendar.
The protest was scheduled for a week; the cases arrived on cue.
The BRS arrived at the Telangana Assembly on September 7 in black protest clothing, carrying slogans against the Congress government’s record after 1,000 days in office. Police stopped the legislators at the entrance, a confrontation followed, and K. T. Rama Rao, T. Harish Rao and others were detained and taken to Telangana Bhavan, according to reports.
The protest then moved beyond Hyderabad. Reports documented dharnas, road blockades and detentions in Siddipet, Suryapet, Medchal, Choppadandi, Nakrekal and parts of Nalgonda, among other locations. The BRS had already announced a week-long campaign from September 2 to 8 over alleged failures to deliver its election promises. The Assembly action added a fresh trigger to an existing programme. Even protest calendars, it appears, now come with a police sequel.
Saifabad police reportedly registered cases against several BRS leaders, alleging misbehaviour with police personnel and abusive language. Police also said the slogans printed on the T-shirts were the reason for stopping the legislators. The BRS alleged excessive force, including mistreatment of women MLAs. Those allegations remain contested; no inquiry finding or medical record was located in the material reviewed.
The Congress government has produced cases and blockades where an answer on the protest itself would have done. The black T-shirts remain the least complicated part of the incident.
