Congress ticket, vacant seat: Khairatabad waits

Khairatabad has been vacant since April 23, 2024 — legally, at least. The Telangana High Court’s September 18, 2026 judgment disqualified Danam Nagender, who won the seat as a BRS candidate in 2023, after finding that he contested the Secunderabad Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket while still an MLA. The court held that this amounted to voluntarily giving up his BRS membership under the Tenth Schedule. (High Court judgment)
The court’s order rendered the seat vacant. Telangana Today has reported that the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer then informed the Election Commission of India, but the underlying letter, the Assembly gazette and any ECI acknowledgement were not available in the material reviewed. The same report says a February 2027 poll is possible; that is not a schedule. No election notification or candidate list has been established.
Nagender had told the Speaker that he remained a bona fide BRS member, had not joined Congress and had not resigned from BRS. The High Court rejected that defence. Congress got the candidate; Khairatabad got the vacancy. The ECI has yet to produce the calendar.
