Gold promise, paper budget
BRS hit the streets over Kalyana Lakshmi/Shaadi Mubarak. The Congress government says little in public; its own budget quietly keeps the schemes — and quietly skips the gold it sold in 2023.

BRS staged statewide protests on Tuesday, 18 August, demanding the Congress government keep Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak running and make good on its election sales pitch of 10 grams of gold for eligible brides. Leaders including Singireddy Niranjan Reddy, Srinivas Goud and Jogu Ramanna led rallies and sit‑ins, submitted memoranda to district officials, and warned against “weakening” the schemes, according to a report.
Here is the record the Congress government in Telangana has to answer: its own 2025–26 Budget in Brief sets aside Rs 3,683 crore for Kalyana Lakshmi/Shaadi Mubarak, and the 2026–27 public estimates carry separate heads under SC, ST, BC and Minority Welfare. The schemes exist on paper and in allocations — exactly where politicians prefer uncomfortable promises to live.
Now the promise. In the 2023 campaign, the Congress sold Rs 1 lakh in cash plus 10 grams of gold at marriage. Government scheme pages continue to state the one‑time cash assistance of Rs 1,00,116 and list the services; they do not show any operational gold component. If there is a Government Order, a guideline, or a budget head for that metal, the Congress government has kept it better hidden than its own manifesto.
What is not established in the public record reviewed: any formal order to scrap or cut the schemes, current payment backlogs, or closed applications. What is established: BRS says the schemes are being threatened and is mobilising; the Congress government has not bothered to explain where the gold went.
