Hyderabad’s voter deletions outrun every 2023 margin

Telangana’s draft-roll process enters a correction phase as an independent analysis flags 19.41 lakh deletions across Hyderabad’s 15 constituencies.

A giant sieve labelled “19.41 lakh” drops paper name-slips into a wastebasket marked “DRAFT” above a Hyderabad polling-station desk, while forms, a correction tray and a deadline calendar sit nearby.

The Hyderabad electoral roll remains a draft, with claims and objections due before final publication.

Hyderabad’s draft electoral rolls have produced a number large enough to outrun the winning margin in every one of the city’s 15 Assembly constituencies. A Sabar Institute analysis, reported by multiple publications, counted 19,41,444 deletions against the 2023 margins. It is an analysis of draft data, not an Election Commission finding that anyone was wrongly removed or that an election result changed.

The formal claims-and-objections process ran from July 31 to August 30, according to the Election Commission’s schedule. Final publication is due on October 1, after disposal of claims and objections by September 28. The Telangana CEO has also scheduled polling-station campaigns for September 5–6 and September 12–13, according to a report quoting the CEO. Voters can check the draft roll and use Form 6 for inclusion, Form 7 for objections or deletion requests, and Form 8 for corrections.

The analysis says deletions in Malakpet and Yakutpura exceeded the total votes polled there in 2023. It also says 40.7% of deleted names were Muslim-identifiable, while warning that name-based classification cannot establish disproportionate targeting. The election administration has not publicly answered the analysis in the material reviewed. For now, the roll is still a draft. The paperwork, unlike the political drama, has a deadline.
