Karnataka promises water; Telangana gets paperwork

Telangana has secured a positive response from the Congress government in Karnataka after seeking water from the Almatti and Narayanpur reservoirs for Jurala and linked irrigation projects. The state said it sought 5,000 cusecs a day for 30 days to protect crops across 5.5 lakh acres, according to a report citing officials.
All India Radio reported that Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar directed officials to expedite the release and assured a 10-day schedule under the Warabandi rotation system. The duration does not match the reported 30-day request, and no written order specifying the final quantity and terms was found in the available research. The Congress government in Karnataka has not bothered to publish the detail that would turn an assurance into water on a timetable.
Telangana officials released water from Jurala’s right canal on September 23, with inflows reported at about 2,687 cusecs. The Krishna River Management Board lists Jurala’s gross storage at 11.941 TMC and its live storage above minimum drawdown at 6.798 TMC. The release has begun; the paperwork is still doing its traditional impression of progress.
