KRMB halts Telangana drawal, leaves ratio unresolved
The board told Telangana to restrict Srisailam hydropower use. AP’s alleged diversions remain awaiting an answer.
The KRMB instruction is clear; the sharing ratio and diversion complaint remain unresolved.
The Krishna River Management Board has told Telangana to stop further drawal from Srisailam for hydropower generation, citing drinking-water and irrigation needs amid forecast below-normal rainfall and El Niño conditions. The direction followed a complaint from the Andhra Pradesh government, according to reporting on the board’s communication.
The same board’s three-member committee met at Jalasoudha on September 4 but failed to settle the 2026–27 sharing ratio. Andhra Pradesh sought continuation of the reported 66:34 arrangement and 104 TMC up to August 2027. Telangana sought 50:50 sharing and 200 TMC, according to the state submissions reported after the meeting.
Telangana Engineer-in-Chief O.V. Ramesh Babu also alleged that Andhra Pradesh was diverting Krishna water through Pothireddypadu and Velugonda in violation of rules. Andhra Pradesh’s position, as reported, is that the withdrawals are from its share. No KRMB finding, flow record or order confirming illegality is publicly available in the material reviewed.
A full board meeting is expected later this month. Telangana has the complaint; the board has the instruction. The answer on the alleged diversions is still somewhere in the paperwork.
