The BJP‑led Centre has denied political clearance for Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s proposed United States visit, while clearing his United Kingdom leg. The Ministry of External Affairs said the US programme his office submitted “was not… appropriate to the office held and the purpose of the visit.” It did not publish the itinerary or name the part that failed its test. According to the CM’s earlier remarks, the stated purpose was education, skills and institutional tie‑ups — meetings and MoUs with universities including Harvard, MIT, Northeastern and Virginia Tech. That is the pitch on record; whether the filed programme met MEA’s bar is the Centre’s unanswered detail.
Rules aren’t in dispute: prior political clearance is mandatory for CMs’ foreign travel, per the Cabinet Secretariat’s guidelines. The dispute is motive. The Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao says this is standard procedure, not politics, and claims the Centre weighed protocol, security, FCRA and the inviting institutions. Those are Rao’s assertions; the MEA has not listed which factor sank the US leg. It did, however, underline that the UK visit is cleared — which makes the selective opacity on the US schedule the actual story.
Revanth Reddy has framed the trip as bringing top‑tier academic partnerships to Telangana under the Centre’s own policy. The BJP‑led Centre says his US programme didn’t suit a CM’s office and won’t say why. If there’s a rulebook reason, it shouldn’t be this hard to cite the rule.
