Revanth promises action; safety checks remain unanswered

A student died and at least 14 were injured at MVSR’s Dandiya event. More than 600 students were present, but the public record still does not say who checked the structure beneath them.

The questions about safety checks remain after the collapse.

A lighting structure collapsed at about 7.30 pm during a Dandiya event at MVSR Engineering College in Nadergul on October 17, killing a first-year student and injuring at least 14 people, according to published reports. Police said more than 600 students were present. The exact injury count remains unsettled: accounts put it between 12 and nearly 20.

Adibatla police have booked the college management and the event organiser under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police Inspector S. Ramesh said the frame fell in the wind and suspected that its footing had not been arranged properly. That is an investigative suspicion, not a final engineering finding. The college’s Director of Academics, J. Prasanna Kumar, said a stand carrying lights in the girls’ section could not withstand a strong gale.

The more important question is still sitting unanswered: who checked the temporary structure, crowd arrangements, emergency access and medical preparedness before the event began? DCP Shamshabad B. Rajesh said the organisers should at least have intimated police about the “massive crowd”. The public record does not establish whether that intimation was given, whether any permission was required, or whether anyone inspected the frame before students gathered beneath it.

The Telangana Council of Higher Education says it will seek a report and is considering a more specific framework covering temporary structures, fire safety, emergency exits and medical facilities. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has promised stringent action. That is the familiar order of operations: a case after the collapse, a report after the death, guidelines after the headline. The Congress government in Telangana has yet to identify who was responsible for prevention before the frame came down. “Action” is not a safety system, and a condolence is not an inspection certificate.
