Rolls open, rumours run ahead

Draft rolls are out in Telangana. Claims and objections run till September 16; the final list lands October 19. In between, expect national parties to shout “deletion” before reading the schedule.

A Telangana electoral-roll calendar stretches across a desk from draft publication to the final-roll date, while open forms, a magnifying glass and a queue of claim files sit in front of a sealed shouting-box marked with speech bubbles.

Telangana’s Special Intensive Revision has moved to the part that actually involves voters: the draft rolls are published and the window to file claims and objections is open till September 16. The CEO’s schedule puts hearings and disposal through October 15, with the final roll due on October 19, which is when any number is real, not when someone tweets it. According to the CEO’s FAQ, names missing at draft stage often trace back to forms not returned or ASDD flags from local inquiry — that is non‑inclusion in the draft, not a final deletion.

A report citing election‑authority data put 48.3 lakh electors in the “identified for deletion/non‑inclusion” bucket during enumeration, with many tagged as shifted. That is an interim classification, not a purge; the CEO’s own calendar keeps the door open for Form 6 (new inclusion) and Form 8 (corrections/address) filings now, and for notices and hearings before any name is struck in the final roll. The frequently‑floated 73.4–73.5 lakh figure is not supported by the CEO’s published material reviewed here.

So here’s the civics and the politics. Civics: check the draft, search your name, and if it’s missing or wrong, file the form in the window the ECI set. Politics: when the BJP discovers the calendar late and the Congress pretends the draft is the final, remember the dates were on the CEO’s site in plain view. The shouting will end on October 19; the register will not.
