Zaheerabad protest follows Sekhar’s death

A 30-year-old man from Bilalpur village in Sangareddy’s Kohir mandal, Gulla Sekhar, died by suicide at home on Tuesday after being questioned by Zaheerabad Town Police over a gold-jewellery theft complaint, according to three reports.
Sekhar’s relatives and BRS leaders allege that he was beaten, abused and tortured during questioning. Zaheerabad DSP B. Saida Nayak denies the allegation, saying police had summoned Sekhar only as part of an inquiry. The reports say Sekhar was released on Monday night after a former BRS mandal president, identified as Narsimhulu or Narsimulu, gave an assurance or stood surety for him.
Family members and BRS leaders later protested and blocked NH-65 with the body. Zaheerabad MLA K. Manik Rao and other BRS leaders were detained. Telangana Today reported a lathi charge; the other reports say protesters were dispersed. The body was taken to the Zaheerabad government hospital for post-mortem.
