Hyderabad-built Vikram‑1 made orbit on July 18, 2026, lifting off from Sriharikota at 12:05:30 pm on Mission Aagaman and injecting the SCOPE and Grahaa satellites into low Earth orbit, according to ISRO. ISRO records this as the first time a private Indian company has undertaken an orbital launch from Indian soil — and Skyroot did it on the first attempt.
The rocket is a four‑stage small-satellite launcher — three solid stages and a liquid stage — with a Department of Space–stated capacity of up to 350 kg to low Earth orbit. ISRO and IN‑SPACe say they provided access to test facilities, safety oversight and launch support; the handholding was formal, not whispered, and it worked.
Set the record straight: this was orbital. Skyroot’s Vikram‑S already flew suborbital in 2022, the first privately built Indian launch vehicle to reach space. Vikram‑1 is the first privately developed Indian rocket to reach orbit from Indian soil. The PM congratulated the team and called it a defining moment; the definition is in the telemetry, not the press notes.
What matters here is the return address: Hyderabad. Skyroot — co‑founders Pawan Kumar Chandana (CEO) and Naga Bharath Daka (COO) — is headquartered here, building hardware for global customers from Telangana. The Centre is welcome to claim “serious global player” status in a PIB line; the manufacturing and the jobs land in this state.
Unanswered, and Skyroot will need to show it fast: full post‑flight performance data, the cadence to commercial service, and paying payloads on the manifest. The Department of Space and ISRO have not yet published a complete payload status beyond SCOPE and Grahaa. The BJP‑led Centre can keep the adjectives; Hyderabad will take the contracts.
