Iran claims 10 ships hit; names remain classified by reality
The IRGC says it targeted two US vessels and eight oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. No vessel names, damage evidence or independent confirmation have emerged.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on September 9 that its naval forces targeted two US vessels and eight oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. It also said 10 other vessels were targeted after attempting to enter what it called a restricted and unsafe area of the Strait of Hormuz. (Anadolu Agency)
The IRGC did not identify the vessels, provide locations or timings, or publish evidence of hits, damage or casualties. The claim appears to trace back to one Iranian statement, repeated elsewhere rather than independently corroborated. A report describing the targets as two US Navy guided-missile destroyers goes beyond the wording available in the IRGC account, which says only “two US vessels.”
The claim follows US Central Command’s statement that American forces destroyed five Iranian crude-oil carriers on September 8, after what CENTCOM said were two Iranian ballistic-missile attempts against a US warship. CENTCOM had earlier said an American aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer evaded Iranian attacks and that no US personnel were harmed. (AP; CENTCOM)
So far, the escalation is documented. The impressive fleet inventory is still awaiting names.
