Madhavan’s GDN opens; ‘worldwide’ per makers

R. Madhavan’s biopic on inventor G.D. Naidu hit theatres on August 7 in five languages. The “worldwide” bit is the makers’ line; overseas screens and collections aren’t on the record yet.

A cinema poster marked “GDN” hangs over a Hyderabad theatre entrance while a giant globe-shaped speech bubble says “worldwide”; beneath it, an empty noticeboard has no overseas screen list or collection figures.

The film opened on August 7, while its overseas footprint remained unspecified.

R. Madhavan’s GDN — a biographical drama on inventor-entrepreneur G.D. Naidu — opened on August 7. According to Cinema Express, the film moved from a July 17 slot and is planned in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.

The “worldwide” claim comes from a production-linked announcement on X on July 17: “#GDN releases worldwide on August 7.” Trade write-ups repeated it, but none named territories, distributors or screen counts. That matters for diaspora audiences deciding if “worldwide” includes their city, or just the poster.

Madhavan also co-produces through Tricolour Films with Sarita Madhavan, alongside Vijay Moolan and Varghese Moolan for Varghese Moolan Pictures, with Krishnakumar Ramakumar directing. The cast includes Priyamani, Jayaram and Sathyaraj, among others — per the trailer listings and coverage.

What’s missing: any audited overseas footprint or opening collections. No screen lists, no ticketing data, no Netflix date — only tags and enthusiasm. The BJP’s culture-war habit of swapping record-keeping for rhetoric has clearly rubbed off on film marketing; “worldwide” ought to come with a map, not a vibe.
