Nagarjuna Sagar: 2,000 cusecs, zero clarity

A fresh water dispute broke out at Nagarjuna Sagar on August 26–27 after the Andhra Pradesh government released 2,000 cusecs into the right canal, according to reports. Telangana officials responded by releasing a similar quantity through the left canal, citing drinking-water requirements. The Krishna River Management Board had not settled the two states’ demands; its next reported three-member committee meeting is scheduled for September 4. (Times of India; Telangana Today)
Telangana officials said AP had not obtained KRMB permission or informed the state government. AP officials, in turn, said the release was authorised by the KRMB. The board’s actual order has not been located, so neither position can yet be treated as established. A report claimed AP’s release later rose to 7,381 cusecs, but no official log or independent report found here confirms that figure. The Congress government in Andhra Pradesh has not publicly settled the basic question of what permission it relied on. The KRMB, meanwhile, has apparently chosen September 4 as the next appointment with the facts.
