Sircilla’s 34 deaths remain a number, not a record

Sircilla’s weaving workforce is facing documented distress, debt and lack of work. But the newly reported figure of 34 suicides over three years remains unverified: no case list, dates, police records or official compilation has been published. (Telangana Today)
Earlier reports recorded competing figures. One report cited 12 weavers and ancillary workers since January 2024; another cited seven Sircilla weavers by late June. December reporting put the number at 13, while officials counted 11 and disputed some classifications. A workers’ association separately cited five deaths in 40 days and later 10 powerloom-weaver suicides. An Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles said a three-member committee would examine the “genuineness” of reported suicides before compensation. The district Collectorate lists “Weaver Suicides” among its responsibilities, but publishes no current count or case register.
