Telugu cinema’s global ambassador gets his name etched on the Institut Lumière’s Mur des Cinéastes in Lyon, during a retrospective that screened Eega and RRR with him in the room.
Rajamouli’s name was added to the Institut Lumière’s permanent Wall of Filmmakers during a Lyon retrospective.
S. S. Rajamouli’s name has been added to the Mur des Cinéastes — the Wall of Filmmakers — at Lyon’s Institut Lumière, alongside names like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. The filmmaker posted about the unveiling during his Lyon visit for screenings of Eega and RRR on July 1; multiple reports carried his account and images of the plaque. According to his post, both films played “to a full house” and Thierry Frémaux, who heads the Institut Lumière and the Cannes Film Festival, introduced him before walking him to the covered plaque.
The Institut Lumière’s own programme confirms the Rajamouli retrospective ran June 27–July 17, with Eega and RRR screened “en présence de S. S. Rajamouli” on July 1. The museum describes the wall as a permanent display, in place since 1982, with copper plaques marking visits by major directors and actors.
File this as what it is: Telugu cinema turning up, being seen, and being engraved — not a Delhi certificate needed and certainly not a Bengaluru permission slip. The BJP-led Centre can spin soft power on a podium; Telangana’s filmmakers are busy putting names in copper in the street the Lumière brothers filmed on.
