Regional cinema travels; Hindi still holds 44%

Telugu films are finding audiences beyond home markets, but the numbers do not support a Hindi-collapse storyline.

At a Hyderabad multiplex imagined as a railway station, small Telugu and regional film trains travel along outward tracks while a much larger Hindi platform marked 44% remains occupied; a clerk pulls down a banner asking whether Hindi has collapsed.

Regional films are travelling further, while Hindi still accounted for 44% of the market in the first half of 2026.

Telugu cinema is travelling better, even if the box-office spreadsheet has declined to provide the requested victory lap.

Ormax Media’s January–June 2026 report puts India’s domestic gross box office at ₹6,398 crore, up 10% year on year. Footfalls rose 5%, from 36.2 crore to 37.8 crore. Hindi films accounted for 44% of the market, up from 39%; Telugu films supplied four of the top 15 titles.

Trade reporting points to stronger regional reach. PVR INOX executive Kamal Gianchandani said regional cinema’s contribution to the chain’s admissions and box office was expected to rise, while its business outside home markets had increased. Telugu–Tamil bilingual Irumudi was reported at ₹174.87 crore in 15 days, though such film-level figures are trade claims, not audited industry totals.

So regional cinema is travelling. Hindi theatrical dominance, meanwhile, has not collapsed. The available data says 44%, which is less dramatic but considerably more useful.
