Sowcar Janaki, 94, a Telugu debut that travelled
The Padma Shri awardee who began with L. V. Prasad’s Shavukaru (1950) and worked across five industries died in Chennai on August 21, according to Nadigar Sangam president Nasser.

Veteran actor Sowcar Janaki died in Chennai on Friday, August 21, 2026, aged 94. Her death was confirmed by Nasser, president of the South Indian Artistes’ Association (Nadigar Sangam). According to his statement carried by multiple reports, her mortal remains were to be placed at Cenotaph Road, Teynampet, on Friday evening.
Janaki’s screen journey began in Telugu cinema with L. V. Prasad’s Shavukaru (1950), which also gave her the “Sowcar” moniker. Over the next seven decades she worked across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi films — more than 400 by the conservative counts cited in industry reports.
She appeared in the 2023 Telugu film Anni Manchi Sakunamule. Reports this week also note that she had been admitted to a Chennai hospital in recent days; the precise medical details vary across accounts and have not been formally stated by the family or the hospital.
The Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri in 2022 for contributions to the arts.
This is a loss across the southern industries, but it is also one that began in Telugu and never left it behind — a fact worth recording without anyone in Delhi needing to certify it.
