Wyra farmers plead; canal opened ‘four feet’

A local report says farmers and leaders of the BRS, CPM and CPI (ML) Mass Line held a dharna outside the Wyra irrigation office on Monday demanding irrigation water from the Wyra reservoir for the ayacut. According to that report, the irrigation department’s Deputy Executive Engineer Naga Brahmaiah told them he had no instructions from higher officials.
The same account names Wyra Sub‑Inspector Puppala Ramarao as the officer who came to calm tempers, and says a farmer from Kurnavalli, Bodepudi Madhava Rao, fell at the SI’s feet pleading for water. After the DE called senior irrigation officials, the report says they agreed to release water and the right‑canal gate was raised by four feet.
This sequence — the appeal, the call, the approval and the four‑foot opening — is reported by one outlet and is not yet backed by an irrigation release order, gate‑operation log, discharge figure or a district bulletin. The farmers’ demand is familiar; Wyra ryots have earlier flagged capacity and delivery issues in the system. What is new is the image of an elderly farmer begging a policeman for water because “higher instructions” hadn’t arrived.
Two names in the report match prior local mentions — SI Puppala Ramarao and DE Naga Brahmaiah — supporting their roles, not what they said on Monday. What would settle the matter is routine paperwork: release quantity in cusecs, timing, ayacut served, and a simple note that water actually reached fields. The Congress government running the department can publish that today; it has not bothered to answer so far.
