Andhra’s Jobs-for-Youth Machine Misplaces the Rulebook

Andhra Pradesh’s coalition government has found a beautiful new definition of administrative success: announce 16,347 teaching vacancies, say “jobs for youth” often enough, and hope nobody asks how 372 sports-quota appointments were processed. The number is small beside the Mega DSC headline. That is precisely why it matters. A recruitment drive is not made transparent by being large. A 16,000-job banner cannot serve as camouflage for a 372-person question mark.

Former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has taken the dispute to Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, seeking a CBI probe. Jagan alleges that the 372 candidates were appointed without the required TET or DSC examination and that some sports certificates may be fraudulent. The Andhra Pradesh High Court has separately directed an investigation into allegations involving fake sports certificates, including in the DSC-2025 recruitment. That is not a conviction, and the appointed teachers deny wrongdoing, saying their sporting records are genuine, verifiable and consistent with the reservation rules. The process is disputed. The evidence now needs to be put in one place, in public, where slogans cannot edit it.

Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha’s answer was to contrast the coalition’s “jobs for youth” with YSRCP “rowdyism”. This is the familiar political trick in which the government changes the subject from eligibility to temperament. The opposition, meanwhile, has discovered a sudden passion for clean procedures after years of treating administration as a family heirloom. Both sides are performing moral outrage with the confidence of people who believe an inquiry is something that happens to the other party.

The selected teachers deserve verification, not collective suspicion. Applicants who studied, tested and waited deserve the same thing. And Andhra’s government, which has made employment its governing brand, owes the public more than a recruitment figure and a speech about order. It owes a complete trail: rule, certificate, examination requirement, appointment and responsibility. Transparency is currently the only candidate who has not been appointed.
