In Andhra Pradesh, the FBI Is One Dropdown Away

Chandrababu Naidu has asked TDP leaders to promote government achievements and fight “false information”, including opposition claims about District Selection Committee recruitment. A few days later, an official Guntur Police request to X identifying the complainant organisation as the US Federal Bureau of Investigation was explained as a “clerical error”. This is the administrative equivalent of arriving at a village meeting in someone else’s uniform and blaming the wardrobe menu.

The posts in question were not recipes for revolution. They reportedly concerned recruitment irregularities, a protest by unemployed youth, and questions about why HRD Minister Nara Lokesh had not resigned. X later told YSRCP activist Nagarjuna Yadav that the request had come from the official Guntur Police email address, submitted by Inspector A.V. Brahmam. The police say somebody selected the wrong option from a dropdown. The department, therefore, did not pretend to be the FBI. It merely clicked like it was.

That distinction will be comforting to anyone who believes institutional credibility is stored safely in a form field. It is less comforting to unemployed young people asking whether recruitment is fair. The government wants every criticism of its schemes examined as possible misinformation, while its own takedown machinery appears unable to establish whether it is Guntur Police or an American federal agency. The public is invited to trust the process because the explanation contains the sacred modern phrase: clerical error.

There was a larger crisis available for attention. Naidu’s own meeting was held against a reported 54 per cent rainfall deficit, reservoir storage falling from 737 TMC to 530 TMC year-on-year, and a stated need for another 71 TMC after 36 TMC had been transferred through Pattiseema. Water, recruitment and public accountability are all stubbornly physical problems. They cannot be solved by selecting “FBI” and asking the internet to remove the question.

The recruitment questions remain unanswered. The FBI, meanwhile, was only a dropdown error.
