Naidu Has Results: Jagan Can Be Arrested in One Minute
Andhra’s governance dashboard now features one completed deliverable: the opposition leader’s alleged arrest time.
N Chandrababu Naidu has offered Andhra Pradesh a fresh definition of administrative efficiency. “I can arrest Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy within a minute,” the Chief Minister said at a public meeting in Konaseema, adding that he had chosen not to do so because it would not benefit the people. This is apparently what value-based politics looks like when the chief value being displayed is access to the handcuffs.
The constitutional version of the sentence would involve an investigation, evidence, due process and, where applicable, a court. Naidu’s version is more direct: I can do it, I am choosing not to, and please admire the restraint. The state briefly sounded less like an administration and more like a landlord explaining that eviction is possible but, for now, the tenant may continue breathing.
This came wrapped in the usual development vocabulary: “Swarna Andhra”, justice for Telugu people, faster projects and visible results. Naidu has also said collectors must deliver results rather than reviews, because pending files mean pending development and pending complaints mean pending justice. Quite right. Unfortunately, the most efficiently processed file in the ruling establishment appears to be the one labelled “How Quickly Can We Arrest Jagan?”
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh JAC has said 30 major demands remain, even after agitation was deferred following government assurances. Employees and pensioners can continue waiting for clarity on interim relief and arrears while the political class conducts a live demonstration of executive potency. The message is beautifully calibrated: salaries may require assurances, projects may require reviews, but political theatre comes with a one-minute service guarantee.
Naidu’s criticism of Jagan’s government — including claims that it delayed Polavaram and damaged Andhra more than bifurcation — is political argument, not a substitute for a charge sheet or a completed project. Jagan, meanwhile, remains useful to the government in precisely the way every defeated rival is useful: as a permanent explanation for why the present has not yet arrived.
Andhra Pradesh wanted results. It got an arrest estimate.
