Revanth’s ₹1 Lakh Crore Number Needs Its Own Department
Telangana asked for land records and received a valuation, a SIT promise, and black magic with no evidence attached.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has discovered the perfect administrative instrument: a number so large it can do the work of several departments. In the Assembly on September 16, he alleged a Telangana land scam worth ₹1 lakh crore and promised a Special Investigation Team. The next day came the claim that companies linked to My Home held 2,463 acres near Shamshabad airport, including parcels Revanth said involved Bhoodan and assigned land. The allegation may eventually meet evidence. For now, ₹1 lakh crore has achieved something rare in government: it has become both headline and substitute for paperwork.
Telangana’s actual land problems remain less cinematic. Farmers want clarity. Citizens want registrations and prohibited-list restrictions explained. Students and the unemployed want a government that can discuss their future without first summoning the previous government’s ghost. Instead, the Congress administration has placed a number on the table and invited everyone to admire its circumference. KTR responded with his own challenge: deposit ₹1 lakh crore into poor people’s accounts and his family would transfer its land and assets. This is not land reform. It is two political establishments conducting a property-themed exchange programme.
The defenders of the Congress say Revanth is exposing the BRS years. The BRS says he is distracting from the Section 22-A controversy. Both sides are now running the same accountability model: point backwards, raise the volume, and wait for the next election to arrive wearing a fresh accusation. The announced SIT is welcome if it produces documents, names, boundaries and conclusions. Until then, it is an investigation-shaped promise, which is the preferred species of promise in Indian politics.
Then came the return of black magic as an explanation for drought, with no public evidence offered. This is Praja Palana after passing through a television studio: when land records are complicated, summon ₹1 lakh crore; when water management is complicated, summon the supernatural; when the Assembly asks for proof, summon KCR. Revanth Reddy’s government has not yet shown Telangana the land scam. It has shown the state a remarkably confident trailer.
The SIT has been announced. The land records are still waiting for the plot.
