Telangana Cabinet Opens Its Family WhatsApp Tribunal

Telangana’s Congress government has discovered a new cabinet principle: guilty by family WhatsApp group. Konda Surekha has been removed from Revanth Reddy’s Cabinet after remarks by her daughter, Konda Sushmitha Patel, triggered a disciplinary row involving the Chief Minister and his family. The official phrase is “party discipline”. The working model is simpler: if a relative speaks inconveniently, locate the nearest minister and remove them from office.

Surekha’s defence was hardly a constitutional thriller. Her daughter is an adult, lives independently and is responsible for her own words. She also asked why the same discipline did not appear when Revanth Reddy spoke confidently about remaining Chief Minister for ten years or announced future political plans before the high command had apparently finished clearing its throat. In Congress, one leader’s advance career planning is vision. Another leader’s daughter criticising the Chief Minister is an institutional emergency.

Sushmitha made allegations about the Chief Minister’s support for a Congress MLA and alleged that prime land had been offered to a company linked to his brother. Those are allegations, not established facts, and they require evidence rather than theatrical repetition. But the government’s answer has not been a transparent examination of the claims. It has been to remove the minister whose family member made them. This is not accountability. It is covering the smoke alarm because the sound is damaging the room’s image.

The party’s disciplinary machinery, represented publicly by leaders including TPCC disciplinary committee chairman Mallu Ravi, says the continuation of Surekha and Planning Board vice-chairman G Chinna Reddy could harm the image of Congress and the government. The cure was to make the government’s internal quarrel visible through an official action. Surekha says she was denied a proper opportunity to explain herself and points to other leaders whose controversial statements did not produce comparable punishment. The party has not so much answered that complaint as provided it with stationery.

Telangana did not elect a government to run succession planning, family-message arbitration and high-command etiquette while roads, land records, welfare payments and jobs wait outside. Revanth Reddy’s administration has shown that its most efficient department is the Department of Taking Things Personally.
