A Haunting World Let Down by Familiar Writing
Mahendragiri Varahi builds a persuasive mythic atmosphere, even when its mystery settles for well-worn answers.

Santhosh Jagarlapudi returns to faith, mystery and the supernatural with Mahendragiri Varahi, a Telugu fantasy thriller that understands the value of atmosphere. The trailer promised misty landscapes, ritualistic imagery and a temple wrapped in unease, and the finished film’s strongest asset is precisely that textured, devotional world.
Sumanth is well cast as the sceptical investigator, bringing the restrained seriousness the material needs. Meenakshi Goswami, Aishwarya Rajesh and Malvika Nair add weight to the ensemble, while Brahmanandam, Vennela Kishore and Rajeev Kanakala provide familiar support without turning the film into a parade of cameos. Anup Rubens’ score wisely chooses dread and mood over manufactured chart-bait. Not every mythological thriller requires a celebratory dance break before the next ominous bell.
The film’s ambition is welcome. It reaches for a rooted Telugu fantasy mystery rather than assembling another interchangeable action vehicle, and the locations, production design and technical mood reward a large screen. The pre-climax appears to be where the filmmaking gathers its best nerve.
The weakness is the writing. The screenplay can feel predictable, and some of the treatment is more artificial than mysterious. The modest opening and mixed early response suggest the film may struggle to turn its intriguing premise into a broad theatrical event.
Still, its world has enough pull to justify the journey. Apparently, the screenplay was left somewhere near the temple entrance.
The verdict: Worth a theatrical watch for the atmosphere.
