Apple’s Foldable Finally Arrives With a Luxury Tax

The iPhone Duo makes folding phones feel polished, then prices itself like a private members’ club.

A polished foldable smartphone sits on a velvet pedestal inside a grand doorway marked ₹3 lakh club, while a receipt and EMI slips form a barrier and ordinary devices wait outside against a Hyderabad skyline.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone arrives in India with a starting price of ₹2,99,900.

This is Telangana.Social's opinion — a house verdict formed from the trailer, cast, buzz and reception, not a substitute for seeing it yourself.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone arrives on 9 September 2026 with a 5.4-inch outer display that opens into a 7.6-inch inner screen. The pitch is familiar launch-event thunder: this is supposedly the biggest iPhone change since the original, a “transformational” phone-tablet hybrid designed to make every existing slab look like an administrative error.

The hardware does appear to justify some of the noise. A 120Hz display, A20 Pro chip, IP68 protection, Wi-Fi 7, Apple Pencil support on the inner screen and two 48MP rear cameras give the Duo a serious specification sheet. Early hands-on impressions praise the polished titanium construction, subdued crease and smooth transition between screens. Apple has not invented the foldable category, but it has made a very Apple-shaped entrance: late, expensive and carefully polished.

The 7.6-inch display is also more than a party trick. Documents, multitasking, video and creative work should benefit from the additional space, while Apple’s software control could help the Duo feel more like a compact computer than a phone performing origami. If developers optimise their apps properly, the format may finally feel purposeful rather than merely photogenic.

That “if”, naturally, is doing useful work. Samsung, Google and Chinese manufacturers have already endured years of hinge experiments, software compromises and durability anxiety. Apple’s achievement is refinement, not reinvention. Its launch language suggests it has discovered folding screens; reality suggests it has discovered the category after everyone else finished beta-testing it.

Then comes the invoice. The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 for 256GB, rises to ₹3,24,900 for 512GB and reportedly reaches ₹4,49,900 for 2TB. At that point it is competing not just with rival phones, but with a premium laptop, a conventional flagship, a tablet and the part of your budget normally reserved for decisions you can defend in public.

Apple can point to expensive foldable displays, complicated engineering and first-generation costs. All fair. It is also charging an early-adopter premium so substantial that “early adopter” begins to sound like a diagnosis. The quoted ₹48,817 monthly EMI, based on six payments and cashback assumptions, does not make the phone affordable. It merely breaks the same large number into smaller pieces and gives each one a blazer.

The early reaction is broadly positive about the product itself and sharply sceptical about its value. That split tells the story. The Duo looks cohesive, useful and impressively mature for a first attempt, but the loudest conversation in India is about the price rather than the camera, display or software. When the bill becomes the launch feature, the marketing department has accidentally reviewed the product for us.

The iPhone Duo is a convincing foldable and a poor financial proposition. Buy it only if you specifically need a polished phone-tablet hybrid and ₹3 lakh feels like pocket change; everyone else should wait for Apple’s inevitable second-generation correction.

Skip it: the iPhone Duo is a superb foldable trapped inside a luxury-tax hostage situation.

The verdict: Skip it unless money has stopped being real.
