Lava’s Curved Phone Bends Reality, Not Physics

Lava’s Virat Curve 5G arrives with the sort of specification sheet designed to make a mid-range phone sound like it has diplomatic immunity: a 6.67-inch curved AMOLED display, 120Hz refresh rate, Dimensity 7100, 50MP Sony camera, 6,000mAh battery, Android 16 and a tiny rear display. Because apparently the front screen needed a wingman.

The good news is that the main screen is genuinely excellent for the money: bright, smooth, HDR-ready and colourful without requiring a mortgage application. The rear display is also more useful than most novelty screens, offering notifications, battery status, time and custom messages. It does not transform the phone into a productivity tool, but it can save you from waking the whole handset to discover that an app has sent another meaningless alert.

Battery life is another clear win. The 6,000mAh cell can comfortably handle a busy day, with testing suggesting around eight hours of screen-on time and enough left for the evening. The charging arrangement, however, is Lava performing a small magic trick: the phone supports 45W charging, but the box includes a 33W charger, making a full charge take roughly an hour and 40 minutes. The hardware brought the fast-charging talent; the accessory department kept it backstage.

The Dimensity 7100 is perfectly competent for daily use and moderate gaming, but the launch language should not be mistaken for a performance promise. Games run acceptably at sensible settings, yet frame drops arrive under pressure and aggressive memory management sends background apps and games back to the starting line. This is a steady mid-ranger, not a pocket-sized gaming revolution.

The 50MP Sony main camera is where the premium act begins to wobble. Daylight shots can be decent, but oversharpening, over-processed colours, weak 2x output and shaky video expose the limitations. There is no OIS, and video tops out at 2K/30fps, with 60fps restricted to 1080p. Mentioning a Sony sensor remains one of the industry’s favourite ways to suggest that image quality has been pre-installed.

The curved display looks expensive but brings the usual accidental-touch nuisance, while the case is less an accessory than a peace treaty. The rear screen shows icons and basic information rather than full messages, so it is a glanceable status panel, not a secret second phone. Lava’s “military-grade” durability claim and IP64 rating are welcome, though neither cancels out the long-term anxiety of repairing a curved panel from a brand whose service confidence is still being tested in public.

Pricing decides whether this phone is clever or merely dressed up. At the effective launch price of ₹19,999, the Virat Curve offers a bright display, clean Android 16, strong battery endurance and a rear screen that is actually useful. At the listed ₹23,999, rivals with better cameras, faster storage or more reassuring after-sales support become much harder to ignore. The phone is also launching in a single 6GB/128GB configuration, which feels less like choice and more like Lava asking everyone to admire the one sample it brought.

The marketing mostly survives contact with reality, but only after the discount has removed the sharpest edges. Lava has built an appealing mid-range phone, not a flagship killer, and the distinction matters.
