BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao has ruled out an alliance with the BJP ahead of the 2028 Telangana Assembly election. The BJP, which has spent years treating political ambiguity as a strategy, gets a clear answer this time.
In an interview reported by The Economic Times on September 16, Rao said: “There have been three general elections since the formation of Telangana and we have never aligned with any party. There is no change in that position. We will not align with the BJP.”
Rao also acknowledged earlier issue-based support for the BJP, including on GST and demonetisation. “We supported BJP on demonetisation and that was a mistake,” he said. On a proposed delimitation bill, he said the BRS could support it if southern states received a proportionate increase in Lok Sabha seats. The distinction is straightforward: Telangana’s interests may earn support; an electoral alliance with the BJP will not. The BJP’s response to Rao’s remarks was not reported.
