India won the Women’s Asia Cup in Dubai on September 13, beating Sri Lanka by 72 runs to claim a record eighth title. The cricket was settled. The presentation, apparently, needed another meeting.
The ceremony was delayed by nearly an hour. India did not appear to collect its team medals or trophy from Asian Cricket Council chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s interior minister and Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, according to the Associated Press. The presentation ended after Sri Lanka’s players and match officials received their awards. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia presented India’s best-fielder medal to Nandani Sharma during the delay.
India coach Amol Muzumdar said, “This is BCCI’s stand (to not take trophy from Naqvi). We can’t say anything on this.” He added: “India are officially the champions. Trophy or no trophy doesn’t matter to us.” That part is difficult to dispute: India made 183/5, dismissed Sri Lanka for 111 and had already won the final before the ACC’s stagecraft began.
