Naidu’s Great Gift to Andhra: Not Arresting Jagan
The Chief Minister has rebranded the absence of an arrest as a public welfare scheme, with no beneficiary list required.
Chandrababu Naidu has unveiled Andhra Pradesh’s latest development model: not arresting Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Speaking at a public meeting in Konaseema on 10 September, Naidu said, “I can arrest Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy within a minute,” but had chosen restraint because it would not benefit the people or create disturbance in the state. Andhra Pradesh may not have received a new hospital, a finished irrigation project or a pension instalment that day. It did receive an update on the Chief Minister’s internal arrest timetable.
This is the peculiar grandeur of Indian political power: a legal process is presented not as something governed by evidence and institutions, but as a personal switch in the Chief Minister’s office. Naidu is not saying the law will take its course. He is saying the course is available on demand, and that he, in a mood of constitutional generosity, has not pressed the button. Non-arrest has become a favour. Patience has become a press release.
Naidu also described the YSR Congress Party as “anarchy while in power and conspiracies after losing power”, and accused the previous government of delaying projects including Polavaram. He claimed Andhra Pradesh suffered more damage between 2019 and 2024 than from bifurcation itself. These are political allegations, not settled findings, but they fit the state’s familiar governing theatre: yesterday’s administration is declared a catastrophe, today’s administration is declared a rescue, and the public is invited to applaud the interval announcement.
The tragedy is not that Andhra politics is partisan. Politics is supposed to be partisan. The tragedy is that every government keeps converting administration into a feud between two men, then calls the feud justice, development and Telugu pride in alternating combinations. Telangana has watched this script long enough to recognise the cost: public capacity is spent on personality management while actual delivery waits outside the press conference.
Andhra Pradesh was promised development. It received a reminder that the Chief Minister knows where the arrest button is.
