Telangana Cabinet Discovers the Family Group Chat

The Revanth Reddy government has unveiled a revolutionary administrative principle: a minister may be held accountable for remarks made by her daughter. It is a striking innovation from a government that otherwise treats responsibility as a message to be forwarded to Delhi. Endowments Minister Konda Surekha was recommended for removal after public remarks by her daughter, Konda Sushmita Patel, reportedly criticised Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and his family, while objecting to the handling of the Parkal ticket. The cabinet has not been reshuffled. It has been moderated.

Surekha’s defence was that her daughter’s remarks were personal opinions and that blaming the minister violated “natural justice”. This is a perfectly respectable constitutional argument, arriving at the precise moment when family politics became a liability rather than an asset. The Congress has long understood the political usefulness of relatives, loyalists and ticket-seekers. It has now discovered the legal independence of adult children through the medium of a disciplinary crisis.

The episode also offers a neat guide to the government’s chain of command. The Chief Minister makes a political indication, a minister’s daughter contests the family arithmetic from a birthday stage, the minister receives a notice, the party committee produces a report, the Governor receives a recommendation and the high command gets the final remote control. Telangana, meanwhile, is expected to admire the efficiency of the process. Hyderabad supplies the announcements, Gandhi Bhavan supplies the quarrels, Delhi supplies the verdict and the state supplies the waiting time.

Surekha has also alleged discrimination as a BC woman leader and claimed that important Endowments Department decisions were taken without her consultation, including matters concerning the Yadadri temple administration and Sammakka-Saralamma temple funds. Those are serious allegations requiring answers, not another round of strategic silence. Revanth Reddy’s reported position that the high command would decide is less a constitutional arrangement than a workplace status update: “Seen by Telangana, forwarded to Delhi.”

The Congress promised administration. It is currently administering a faction. Telangana’s cabinet is functioning like a family WhatsApp group with Delhi as the only person allowed to mute members.
