An ankle ligament tear has ended Neeraj Chopra’s 2026 season after his 88.05m throw in Lausanne.
Neeraj Chopra has announced that an ankle ligament tear suffered during training will keep him out for the rest of the 2026 season. That rules India’s two-time Olympic medallist out of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, scheduled for September 19 to October 4, and the Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 4–5.
Chopra said the decision followed discussions with his doctor and team. “Unfortunately, shortly after, I sustained a ligament tear in my ankle during training,” he said, adding that he had decided to sit out the remainder of the season. No public medical report has specified which ankle or ligament was affected, the severity of the tear, treatment or recovery timeline.
The timing is particularly unfortunate. Chopra had thrown a 2026 season-best 88.05m in Lausanne on August 21, finishing second behind Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who recorded 88.14m. The throw had put Chopra sixth in the Diamond League standings and secured his place in Brussels. The season had finally started behaving like a season. Then training intervened.
