Eight MLAs, principal Opposition ambitions
The BJP is campaigning for the title. The ECI’s Assembly numbers have not joined the campaign.

The BJP has eight Telangana MLAs and a new political ambition: to be treated as the state’s “principal Opposition”. The Election Commission’s 2023 record, less interested in branding exercises, gives the BRS 39 seats against the BJP’s eight. The Congress has 64 and AIMIM seven.
The BJP’s campaign is built around fee reimbursement, farmers’ insurance and September 17. Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao said party workers collected signatures from around eight lakh students over fee-reimbursement grievances. That is the BJP’s figure, not an independently verified count. The party has also sought to call September 17 “Telangana Liberation Day”; the Congress government officially observes it as “Praja Palana Dinotsavam”. Even the calendar has acquired a party line.
BRS leaders have separately raised Section 22A land issues in the Assembly and in protests. That establishes activity, not a formal title. No Assembly order, Speaker’s ruling or government notification designating the BJP as principal Opposition was found in the material reviewed. For now, the BJP has a campaign, eight seats and a job title it has awarded itself.
