Hyderabad sanitation workers protested at GHMC headquarters on September 18 over a reported proposal to shift garbage collection to private companies. Nearly 200 workers and Swachh Auto Tipper drivers took part, according to Telangana Today. The protest was reportedly their third in a month.
Workers tried to submit a representation to the GHMC commissioner, but police intervened when protesters attempted to enter the office, with jostling reported by multiple accounts. Andhra Jyothy reported that women workers were arrested. The GHMC and police have not publicly clarified that account in the material reviewed.
The workers allege that door-to-door collection could be handed to private agencies and that Ramky is involved. But GHMC’s publicly accessible tender page does not show a clearly identifiable current contract for citywide or zone-wide door-to-door collection. GHMC’s own records say it handles about 4,500 metric tonnes of garbage daily, with 92% door-to-door coverage and 663 vehicles. Its Citizen Charter assigns street cleaning, garbage lifting and transport to circle offices.
Ramky has been part of earlier Hyderabad waste-management arrangements. That is evidence of history, not proof of a 2026 award. GHMC has not published the tender, work order or worker-transition plan that would turn the protest’s central allegation into a documented decision. For now, the contract is doing better in the protest reports than in the tender register.
