Gurukul sanitation bills ‘stuck’; Congress shrugs
A Telugu daily says sanitation contractors at Telangana’s gurukuls haven’t been paid for five to eight months, with pests reported on campuses. A report in a Telugu daily alleges the Congress-run Telangana government has not cleared sanitation bills at gurukuls for five to eight months, pushing agencies to cut staff and, in some places, stop work. It also claims overgrown campuses saw rats and snakes enter dorms, that water tanks weren’t cleaned properly, and that students fell ill. These are the paper’s assertions; no tender, invoice register or inspection memo was published with it. (NTNews)
What we can corroborate: gurukul arrears are not new. In November 2025, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka ordered Rs 163 crore released towards pending SC and Minority Gurukul dues including diet, rent and midday-meal bills — proof the pipeline had already clogged on his watch. The same report cites incidents at Penuballi (rat bites), Devarakadra (snakebite) and a Jagitial snakebite death “last year”. The Mahabubnagar district page confirms a TSWREIS boys’ school exists at Devarakadra; it does not record any bite incident. We did not locate police, hospital or district records for the alleged injuries or death, nor sanitation contracts showing the claimed four workers per campus for Rs 40,000 a month. For context, the Telangana Human Rights Commission took suo motu note in February 2026 of students being made to do cleaning work in Hyderabad schools when sweepers were unavailable — a staffing failure the Congress government still has not explained.
