Hyderabad’s “fire tax”? Show us the Gazette
A viral post says Telangana just slapped a fire tax on Hyderabad. The law allows it — but there’s no notification, no rate, no date, and no paper trail in the state’s own records.

A Reddit post doing the rounds claims the Congress government in Telangana has introduced a “fire tax” for Hyderabad. The Fire Service Act does allow one — Section 36 permits a surcharge on property tax up to 5% — but it also says it must be imposed “by notification in the Official Gazette.” According to the law itself, that notification is the whole ball game.
We looked where such a move would live: the state’s e‑Gazette, where authentic notifications are published, and the departments that would touch it. As of the check, no clearly identifiable fire‑tax notification, no rate, no start date and no GHMC billing instruction were visible in the government’s own Gazette portals. The April 2026 material on the state site is about draft amendments to the Fire Services Act and was explicitly put out to invite public suggestions by May 13 — not to levy a charge.
So yes, the statutory power exists; no, there’s no official notification in the records we checked to show it has been used. If the Congress government has actually imposed a new surcharge, it can point to the Gazette entry. That’s how this works.
