Kaleshwaram repairs: designs ready, approvals still loading
Telangana says rehabilitation of the Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages could begin by mid-November and finish before the 2027 monsoon. The technical clearances are still pending.
Rehabilitation designs are ready, but technical approvals and tender preparations remain pending.
The Telangana government says it has prepared rehabilitation designs for the Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages and expects work to begin by mid-November 2026, with completion targeted before the 2027 monsoon. The schedule comes from Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy; it is a target, not yet a publicly documented work order.
The proposed package includes foundation strengthening through grouting, extended stilling basins and new cutoff walls. But the designs are still undergoing modelling at the Central Water and Power Research Station, Pune, and are due for examination by the Central Water Commission’s Technical Oversight Committee. Cost estimates and the contracting method are also still being prepared. Tendering comes after approval — the paperwork, as usual, gets the first shovel.
The government’s April directions required restoration to follow completed investigations, NDSA guidelines and approvals at every stage. It has also said the barrages will operate only after rehabilitation and safety clearances from national authorities. An earlier June target placed the start in late November or December and completion in summer 2027. The newer mid-November date remains conditional. The BJP-led Centre’s technical gatekeepers still have to clear the file before Telangana can put the barrages back to work.
