Karimnagar is scheduled to get a centralised kitchen for the Telangana school-breakfast programme on September 16, with the facility set to be inaugurated at the Agricultural Market Yard by Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar. The breakfast, sensibly, is still waiting for inauguration day.
A report says the kitchen has an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore and is intended to serve 49,025 students across 669 government schools and 11 junior colleges in 17 mandals. Those figures have been repeated in local coverage, but no publicly accessible Telangana government order, tender, funding document or beneficiary list was found to confirm them independently. The first day of actual food service is also not stated.
The Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Foundation says its rotating menu includes idli, puri, dosa, upma, millet dishes and bonda, with milk on alternate days. Its website says the programme began as a Kodangal pilot in December 2024, serving 24,000 breakfasts daily across 312 schools in eight mandals. The foundation does not specifically publish the Karimnagar project’s cost, coverage or funding arrangement.
The wider plan is reported as 31 kitchens, but the stated target varies from 17.72 lakh to nearly 20 lakh students. Telangana deserves the breakfast programme. It also deserves to know who is paying for it, what each meal costs and when the first one arrives.
