Kavach 4.0 reaches Telangana, 108 route-km later
Indian Railways says the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section is the first on South Central Railway to receive the upgraded train-protection system.

Kavach 4.0 has been commissioned over 108 route kilometres between Malkajgiri and Kamareddi in Hyderabad Division, Indian Railways said on September 23. It is the first commissioning of the upgraded system on South Central Railway, according to the Railway Ministry statement reported by Akashvani News and UNI.
The upgrade moves the section from Kavach 3.2 to Version 4.0. The Railway Ministry says the newer version offers more accurate train location, better signal-aspect information in larger yards, station-to-station communication through optical fibre cable and a direct interface with existing electronic interlocking systems. RDSO approved the Version 4.0 specification on July 16, 2024.
Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection system designed to supervise speed, respond to signal conditions and apply emergency brakes when required. That makes this a useful upgrade for Telangana’s rail network, even if it does not bring a new train, a shorter journey or a timetable change. The Ministry has not publicly provided the project cost, safety certificate, rolling-stock coverage or detailed section-wise implementation in the material available for this report.
