Musi’s 21 km moves; compensation doesn’t

Hyderabad’s Musi riverfront is finally past the pretty render stage in the west: MRDCL has tenders up for fixing boundary stones along two stretches — 9.20 km from Himayat Sagar to Gandhi Sarovar and 11.8 km from Osman Sagar to Gandhi Sarovar — a clean 21 km to start with. According to the corporation’s own documents and tender page, the work is about marking river limits and buffers, not yet the big civil contracts.
On the ground, the acquisition is in the notify-and-object phase. Revenue officials in Rajendranagar issued notices covering pockets like Kismatpur and Dargah Khalikhan, called a gram sabha, and said written objections will go up the chain and compensation will follow the Land Acquisition Act, per reporting from the time. A separate notification round invited owners within the maximum flood level/buffer to voluntarily surrender land for Transferable Development Rights (TDRs), listing villages from Gandipet and Narsingi to Bandlaguda Jagir and Budvel.
Residents and owners are pushing back on terms and values. Protests have been reported in affected localities, including Bandlaguda Jagir, as people challenge the extent notified and what is on offer. The Congress government’s public line is generous — “deserving poor” to be rehabilitated with double-bedroom houses or alternatives, housing “within their own localities wherever needed,” and “fair compensation so that alternative land can be acquired,” as the Chief Minister has said — but the administration has yet to publish, for this 21-km phase, the simple basics: the final extent, the official count of affected owners versus households, and the exact compensation formula beyond TDRs.
One piece is moving: defence land for Gandhi Sarovar. Reporting says the Defence Ministry has cleared working permission over about 83 acres at Bapu Ghat — helpful, if the state also clarifies how that ties into the private and government parcels being notified alongside.
What would settle most of this is the document the government already has: the full acquisition notification with survey numbers, totals, and stage-wise status. Until that is on the table, owners will object blind and MRDCL will be marking buffers to a moving target. The Congress government in Telangana keeps saying it will be fair; it can start by publishing the numbers it’s already using.
