ASHA workers protesting in Hyderabad for a fixed monthly wage of Rs 18,000 were detained as they tried to move towards the Telangana Assembly on September 11, according to multiple reports. The workers are also seeking job security, PF, ESI benefits and payment of pending dues.
Reports said protesters were stopped in groups and taken to police stations. Two workers became unwell during police action near Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Bagh Lingampally and were taken to hospital. The reports do not establish the medical cause. Claims of dragging, abusive language, injuries caused by police and 1,800 arrests remain allegations by workers and union leaders, not independently verified facts.
The wage demand has been part of the unions’ continuing agitation. Union leaders say the Rs 18,000 payment was a Congress election promise. The Telangana government and Hyderabad Police have not publicly answered the detention claims in the material reviewed. For frontline health workers, the promise remains fixed only in campaign memory.
