Six students died after drowning at Nereducherla lake near Pedda Kanjerla in Sangareddy district on Wednesday evening, during Ganesh idol immersion activity, police said in accounts reported by multiple publications.

The students were associated with the Sirisha/Siresha Memorial Charitable Trust in Inole, reports said. Nine students reportedly entered the water; three swam back to shore. Local residents helped recover the six bodies, which were taken to a government hospital for postmortem.

Police accounts differ on what happened. One account said the students entered deeper water and encountered a large underwater pit. Another, attributed to Serilingampally DCP Ch Srinivas, said police had not yet established the cause and that the students may have slipped. The sequence remains under investigation.

Reports also differ on whether the lake was an officially notified immersion point. No official notification, FIR copy or police press note was available in the material reviewed. The authorities will need to establish the safety arrangements and supervision at the site, rather than leave the lake to provide the final answer.
