Vaibhav Sooryavanshi took over as East Zone’s stand-in captain during its 2026–27 Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone in Bengaluru on August 30, after captain-wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan was struck on the right hand while keeping and left the field for medical attention. Kumar Kushagra took over behind the stumps. The tournament, at least, had a succession plan that did not require a committee meeting.

The BCCI’s squad announcement lists Kishan as captain and Sooryavanshi as vice-captain. Reports said Sooryavanshi assumed control in the 19th over of Central Zone’s innings. East Zone won the toss and chose to bowl, with Central Zone reaching 81/3 after 32 overs in the first session, according to the available match reports.

Sooryavanshi had also taken two wickets for 11 runs in three overs during East Zone’s quarter-final win over North East Zone. The semifinal’s final result, Kishan’s subsequent availability and the formal status of Sooryavanshi’s captaincy were not confirmed in the material reviewed.
