Strike paused, promises started

Auto-rickshaw unions called off their planned indefinite strike set for midnight August 23–24 after talks with Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Sunday. According to Akashvani’s report of the meeting, the government promised a welfare board for auto workers, a study-led review of fares stuck since 2012, a state-backed ride-hailing app, and EV support that’s been separately trailed for Hyderabad’s core urban region.
The welfare board is announced, not constituted. A tripartite meeting of Labour, Transport and union representatives is scheduled for September 1 to finalise rules — the first real administrative step, still ahead of us. Fares will be “examined” before any hike and require an order; none has been issued. On the much-floated ₹12,000 support to drivers, the minister said a decision will follow consultations with the Chief Minister and cabinet, citing finances. In other words: undecided.
The EV push is the most concrete piece so far. A separate report says assistance of up to ₹1.5 lakh per vehicle is proposed for 18,766 eligible IC-engine autos in Hyderabad’s core area, subject to scheme conditions. Final notifications, vendor lists and timelines weren’t in the material available. The government-backed app is a plan, not a download link yet. And for the record, the minister dismissed talk of TGSRTC buying electric autos as propaganda.
One thing did happen: Hyderabad’s para-transit didn’t grind to a halt on Monday. The rest now needs to survive the distance between a meeting note and a government order — a gap the Congress likes to fill with slogans, the BJP with lectures, and commuters with waiting time.
