The BRS held a mock Assembly at Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad on Saturday, September 12, after its legislators were suspended for the remainder of the Telangana Assembly’s monsoon session. The party used the event to raise irrigation, jobs, power supply, Section 22-A land restrictions, women’s safety, tribal issues and election promises — issues it said the Congress government had failed to address in the House.
K. Manik Rao acted as Speaker, Talasani Srinivas Yadav as Chief Minister, Palla Rajeshwar Reddy as Irrigation Minister and Gangula Kamalakar as Revenue Minister. Talasani, playing the government, supplied the evening’s most efficient summary of political accountability: “We said 100 days, but did we say which 100 days?”
K. T. Rama Rao said the mock session followed what he called a “mockery of democracy” and urged the government to revoke the suspensions and allow the BRS back into the Assembly. The Congress government has criticised the exercise, but the material reviewed contains no point-by-point response to the BRS’s claims on jobs, water, power or land. The government has managed to keep the real Assembly and the parody competing for credibility.
