Tank Bund barricades, one very avoidable festival plan
BGUS representatives protested against immersion restrictions on September 21. The legal rule was known; the operational clarity apparently was not.
Tank Bund’s immersion arrangements became a dispute over how a known restriction was to be implemented.
Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi representatives protested at Hyderabad’s Tank Bund on Monday, September 21, against restrictions on immersing idols from the Hussain Sagar side. Several reports said protesters removed barricades, after which police intervened and pushing broke out. The group later staged a sit-in.
Officials cited Telangana High Court directions restricting the immersion of Plaster of Paris and synthetic-material idols in Hussain Sagar and other lakes. A published summary of the court directions also says there is to be no permission for immersion from the Tank Bund side. The precise 2026 operational order, however, has not been published in the material reviewed.
GHMC’s August 31 festival coordination meeting had already discussed barricading, cranes and immersion arrangements for the Balapur–Tank Bund route. BGUS’s own instructions say it coordinates with police and follows issued guidelines. That leaves the public with a familiar civic innovation: a festival plan, a restriction, and a confrontation over what the plan actually meant. The police and GHMC versions, and any FIR or injury details, remain unconfirmed.
