The Paradise cut the context, kept the controversy
Nani and Srikanth Odela say editing broke the meaning of a disputed scene involving Kayadu Lohar’s character.
The director and lead actor said editing removed context from the disputed scene.
The Paradise released on September 24 with a scene that appeared to reduce Kayadu Lohar’s character, Subbalakshmi or Subbu, to the suggestive videos she makes for money. The line “single shot actress”, spoken by her mother, drew criticism for making the moment look like a joke rather than a comment on survival and lost ambition. The film, apparently, left the explanation on the editing-room floor. A familiar national habit, but this time the missing context was doing actual work.
In a post-release interview reported by India Today and The Indian Express, director Srikanth Odela said Subbu’s family had no food, her father had left, and the videos were their means of support. He said the mother’s line was intended to mean that Subbu could have become a proper artiste if she had pursued acting. Nani said the connection between the setup and payoff broke during editing and accepted that the scene was not presented clearly enough. He also said this was the first time in his 33-film, 18-year career he had faced such a reaction.
The makers have explained the intention. The released scene still has to answer for what it communicated. No public comment from Kayadu Lohar, or confirmation of a revised cut, was found in the material reviewed.
